At night before I go to bed, I’ve been watching old Youtube clips from programs like the Carol Burnett Show (full episodes of which are posted on Youtube) and the Muppet Show. It’s been an interesting glimpse into what people found funny back in the 1970s — lots of cornball jokes that are kind of mystifying and silly. Of course maybe it’s because these were family shows. Are there still family-oriented sketch comedy shows that feature lots of musical numbers? It’s impressive what these people were able to do without saying naughty words or making overtly sexual jokes.
I particularly enjoyed Gilda Radner’s duet with a giant snooty singing carrot, a segment which starts around 6:08 in this video:
